Background:
At
the time of coming to our home:
Cui
Meng die is four years old. She is presently living with her grandfather
and grandmother, both ages 68 and both are street sweepers in XinMi.
In Henan people are employed to sweep the streets with a large straw
broom; of course their wages are less than minimum. They had three
children, a son who disappeared years ago, a second son (the father
of Meng die) and a daughter who left when she was 16 years old and
in the past 15 years they have received only one letter telling
them she lived in Shandong Province. The middle son waited many
years for his older brother to get married and after the oldest
son left, the second son had already gotten pretty old so they found
a woman who was willing to marry him to give him a child for the
price of 30,000 Yuan ($5000). The third day after giving birth,
she gave them the baby and left. There are women who do this kind
of activity to make money. Then in 2012 the girl's father fell from
a cliff and died - they say he committed suicide but of this they
are not certain. This older couple put the little girl into nursery
school when she was two years old and she is bussed back to XinMi
only on the weekends on a school bus. Thus most of this little girl's
life has been spent in Pre-school. As the couple has had to depend
on hand-outs for clothing and monetary help to keep her in pre-school,
things continue to get harder and harder for them. It was obvious
they were in great need just to pay rent, buy food and survive.
At some point we realized we were going to have to help this little
child as the couple were getting older and when they could no longer
sweep streets will have no income at all.
