Family Background:

His father deserted the child before he was born. His mother remarried 6-8 years ago. His grandfather died in 1997 and his grandmother died in January 2006.His grandmother was taking care of the crippled uncle and the little boy before she died.

One uncle works in Zhengzhou and doesn't feel obligated to help the little boy. The youngest uncle works in the coal mines and has his own children and is quite poor. He seems to have a Christian family. But since the grandmother had been taking care of the crippled man and the little boy none of the uncles seemed to feel obligated to help the little boy.

The crippled uncle repaired shoes for 12 cents a day and he received about 15 dollars a month from the government. He really couldn't take care of the boy by himself. He came to the Xinmi government since he heard there was an orphanage hoping he could find a better place for his little nephew. This crippled uncle was killed a week after we met him and the little boy.
It took him amost a year to feel really comfortable with us. He lost his grandmother and uncle with whom he had always lived, both within 3 months time. He would

not let people get close to him and rarely smiled. After a year he began to make some wonderful changes. He is mixing more with the other children and seems to be a little more open. He used to be very quiet and seemed very introvert. Our house mother spoke with his teacher and put him as the leader of a small study group and she agreed. The house mother also continues to make him leave his room and go out to play and spend time with the other children to help him become more open and outgoing.
