FAMILY BACKGROUND:

In 1994 his father died in a coalmine collapse and five years later in December 1999 his mother died of an unknown disease. He then lived with his grandma who was a widow.

He and his grandmother moved back and forth between the homes of her two living sons. Both of these uncles were also extremely poor and had their own children that they could barely care for. Pan deng also had two older sisters; one was seventeen and was working in a village factory to earn enough money to keep her brother and sister in school but her salary was inadequate.

He didn't appear to have any warm clothing when we first saw him and later his teacher told us that his family's living situation was really very terrible and that other children even in this poor countryside didn't dress as poorly as he. She also said that sometimes people would give them clothes. His grandma was working in the heat in the field in a heavy shirt because it was all she had; she was also blind in one eye and wore an oversized glass eyeball that gave her a strange appearance. They had no furniture, only boards on which to sleep. This little boy was extremely pale and thin before we brought him to live in our home.

To the left: little Pan deng was so undernurished and life was so difficult and hopeless and he was so afraid of everything around him.
To the right: Pan deng's grandma who took care of him when he was in the countryside died later after we brought him to our home.

Yin Pan deng came to us in 2001. His life was extremely terrible in the countryside. He was always excessively shy but we have watched him grow up and out of his introverted habits. He smiles a large happy smile today and has made a lot of progress in school, becoming a pretty fair student. This has changed him into a happy young boy with a good outlook about life. He absolutely loves basketball and once said, "Basketball has really built up my confidence."
