His father died in 1991 from rabies caused by a dog bite and in November of the same year his mother died of a disease. In 1992 his grandmother died so now he only has his grandpa who is caring for the boy by himself.

LIVING RELATIVES: His grandpa, Liu, who has been working for SANCS as the gatekeeper and gardener since 2006

OTHER DATA:

His grandpa is a very poor farmer. Their room was very poor with a stove made of mud piled up and hardened. The little boy didn't even have socks for the bitter winter or a coat. He had only a thin pair of pants and a top which was the uniform worn by students; he had no other clothes. Although A Nan had some boards to sleep upon they were bare. The little boy also tried selling things like pens, toothpaste, light bulbs and some other small things to save enough money for his school fees. The grandfather cried and cried pleading with us to help his little grandson.

PERSONALITY AND BEHAVIOR:

Liu A nan is a quiet boy and he has always tried to be helpful to everyone. He likes to play basketball but with his studies he has little opportunity to do so. He and his grandpa had such a hard life in the countryside but he immediately took it upon himself to show his gratitude to work in helping around the home when he came to live with us. In 2006 we were able to bring his grandpa into the home to be our yardman and gatekeeper. A Nan is so diligent with his studies but he is only a fair student. This has brought heaviness on this young man not unlike that which many in China must bear. After he graduated from his middle school he didn't score high enough to go to high school. We put him in a technology high school in Xinmi and he has done quite well.
