Family Background:

This boy's mother, Chen Hua yu, died long ago of cancer. His father, He Yin Zhu who was born on Feb. 4, 1966 had TB and later had a wall fall on him in year of 2000. At the time when when visited Yan qing in the countryside he was living with his thirteen year old sister and his grandparents. Both of his grandprarents were 65 years old. They tried to do some labor and farming jobs for income but can't do much because the grandma was crippled and the grandpa's hands were crippled up with arthritis. Grandparents had another son and a daughter. The son was 41 years old and he also has two children of his own. The daughter was 35 years old and she has 3 children.

The local government gave them 36 yuan ($4) a month and free school fees but they must pay for their own books, paper, pencils, etc .

When Yan qing came to us in the summer of 2005, it was very difficult for him to catch up since he missed so much school back when he was in the countryside. At that time he was ten years old but since he scored so low in his entrance exam he had to start from the first grade. He was happy to do so and has done a remarkable job.

He Yan qinq is somewhat playful; loves basketball; and is willing to help his younger little brother, Zhou ping. He not only helps Zhou ping with his studies but watches over him for his safety. He is open and outgoing.
